I’m a big tea drinker, but with summer approaching, I feel less inclined to drinking piping hot cups of tea. I need something more refreshing so I naturally turn to iced tea. I used to live in a town that had a pretty rad tea shop which made a delicious iced tea mocktail, called the mojitea (isn’t it a great name?), but now that I moved out, I can’t go there and enjoy it as often as I’d like anymore. So I decided to recreate it at home! Turns out it is super easy, and so delicious and refreshing that I’ll be enjoying it all summer long!
To make a mojitea, you need to brew some iced tea first. For 1 litre of iced tea you’ll need:
- 4 tbsp (or 2 teabags) mint flavoured green tea (for other uses, you can make iced tea with
any of your favourite tea! But use mint or unflavoured green tea for the mojitea)
- 4 tbsp sugar
- 1 litre cold water (4 cups)
Mix all the ingredients in a pitcher and refrigerate overnight. Strain and discard (or compost!) the tealeaves, and voila, your iced tea is ready!
- 2 quarters of a lime (choose organic if possible as non-organic ones have their skins treated with chemicals)
- 1 tbsp cane sugar
- The leaves of 1 mint sprig
- Mint iced tea (you’ll need a bit less than a cup to 1 cup tea per drink, or 200 to 250 ml, depending how big your glass is)
- Ice cubes
In a big glass, muddle the sugar, mint and lime. Add a few iced cubes and top with iced tea. Done!
Now all you have to do is to enjoy your drink in a sunny place! Drink with a straw, muddling the lime and mint and mixing the sugar as you go!
For a sparkling version, brew a stronger iced tea (increase the tea by 1 tbsp or use 3 cups of water) and top the mint and lime mix with 2/3 iced tea and 1/3 sparkling water.
